In 2009 Bourne Hall Museum put together an exhibition of photos in Bourne Hall foyer, bringing back to life long-gone buildings of character that many argue should never have been demolished. Jeremy Harte, the museum curator, very kindly gave us access to the images which we have put on these pages.
This magnificent vicarage was built when Christ Church was enlarged in 1876. It proved too large for later incumbents, and a much smaller one has replaced it.
The Lecture Hall in Upper High Street was built in 1883 to house the Congregational Church's Sunday School. Long hidden behind a parade of shops, it burnt down in 1990.
The growing Catholic population of Epsom, many from racing, led to the building of St. Joseph's church in 1866.
St. Francis' church in West Ewell was consecrated in 1939, though a projected tower never arrived. Built on clay, the church cracked in the middle and was demolished in 1997.
Epsom's Methodists built a chapel off Waterloo Road in 1863. By 1914 they had moved to their present site and the old one was sold to the Ancient Order of Foresters. Link to our Forresters page
St. Joseph's church was rebuilt on the old site in two phases - the east end in 1930, and the nave and aisles in 1961.
